Diane Arbus -short depth of field

(Short depth of Field)

Diane Arbus

Born Diane Nemerov in 1923  to wealthy Jewish family in New York.
She married a photographer Allan Arbus they both found success with fashion work, but soon Diane branched out on her own to produce raw images of unusual people.

In the late 1950s she began talking photos of people she visited in seedy hotels, public parks even the morgues.

By the 1960s Diane Arbus was well established photographer, putting on shows in the Museum Of Modern Art in New York.

In the late 1960s she had personal challenges. Her marriage ended in 1969, and she later struggled with depression.

She committed suicide in her New York apartment in 1971.

Arbus continues to fascinate, the photos are amazing to look at, even startling. The images of the downtrodden and the marginal have become common in movies and advertising.

My thoughts are that Diane Arbus's work is exceptional, haunting, the photos draw you into the picture revealing a strange unusual mesmerising image.

"A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know" Diane Arbus.
Her work asks questions of the viewer about the limits of looking.

with raw exceptions, Arbus made Photos only of people.
